Canterbury Boys High school is a school committed to the betterment of its community, which is why it provides a number of volunteer programs for students to participate in. That has led to our school receiving a NSW Minister's award for achievements in volunteering in the past.
At Canterbury Boys we understand the importance of being active and contributing to our school, local and global community. Those that choose to volunteer gain an understanding of a range of social justice issues. They develop a sense of their place in society and where they can best make a difference today and in their future pursuits. The boys gain valuable experiences that help develop integrity, empathy and respect.
Volunteering opportunities
Bupa
Our strongest external volunteering partnership is with BUPA Aged Care Facility in Ashfield. This partnership expanded this year to involve the Clemton Park facility. Our senior students and our work education students volunteer regularly at Bupa.
Exodus
This year we have established a partnership with Exodus Loaves and Fishes Restaurant at Ashfield. Our Work Studies class volunteer at Exodus. A mental health community support worker with New Horizons contacted the school to commend the class who attended the Loaves and Fishes Restaurant. "Your students treated my customer with respect, courtesy, and human dignity. For him that meant just as much, if not more, than the opportunity to have a hot nutritious meal. I am so impressed that your school is participating in volunteering and community work, and developing well rounded, respectful, and compassionate young men."
Canterbury - Hurlstone Park RSL
Our Year 10 students who participate in the Certificate II Hospitality Scholarship program with CHPRSL are also involved in volunteering at the club. They work in the bistro and their involvement is greatly acknowledged by the local community.
School-based
Many school volunteering opportunities exist for students. This includes our Green Squad and student construction team contributing greatly to school beautification.
How to get involved?
Volunteering opportunities are available for any student. It is an expectation that students involved in formal leadership programs (Prefects and SRC members) get involved. In addition, students that select work studies as a Year 9 and 10 elective or work education for their HSC will also participate in volunteering as part of their studies.
Any other interested students can see our Careers Advisor, Ms Giameos.
