Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Mathematics at Canterbury Boys High School

Canterbury Boys High School seeks to develop student's mathematical thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of mathematics. We encourage the boys' engagement in lifelong learning and their appreciaton of mathematics.

Canterbury Boys High School has much to offer in mathematics:

  • enthusiastic, experienced staff
  • all levels catered for in Years 9-12
  • new texts and resources
  • Mathletics accounts
  • caring and positive learning environment
  • competitions such as Australian Mathematics Competition and ICAS Competition
  • Homework Centre to support learning.

Students at Canterbury Boys High School develop an awareness of how mathematics can be used to solve problems in everyday life. They also learn of its contribution to the development of society.

What subjects/courses do we offer?

The mathematics faculty offers a wide range of subjects and courses that vary when it comes to the Year of a student. Which includes subjects and courses for different Year groups such as:

  • Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8) – mathematics
  • Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) – 5 lessons/cycle; pathways 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3
  • Stage 6 (college classes) – Mathematics Advanced (ATAR), Mathematics Standard (ATAR), Mathematics Extension 1 (ATAR), Mathematics Extension 2(ATAR)

Depending on the students Year group they will follow the mathematics curriculum designated to best suit them and their level. Which have been rigorously designed and structured for the students to get the most out of their classes.

What will students learn about in mathematics?

At Canterbury Boys, students learn about numbers, patterns and algebra, data, measurement, space and geometry in a challenging and creative environment.

Within each of these strands students cover a range of topics including:

  • fractions, decimals, percentages and scientific notation
  • consumer arithmetic
  • coordinate geometry
  • perimeter, area, surface area and volume, trigonometry
  • properties of solids, geometrical figures, deductive geometry.
  • probability and statistical analysis
  • algebraic techniques, equations and inequalities

What will students learn to do?

We encourage the boys to develop strong mathematical thinking so they can appreciate mathematics as an essential and relevant part of life. Though inquiry, problem solving, reasoning and reflection, students learn to ask questions in relation to mathematical situations and their mathematical experiences; to develop, select and use a range of strategies, including the use of technology, to explore and solve problems; to develop and use appropriate language and representations to communicate mathematical ideas; to develop and use processes for exploring relationships, checking solutions and giving reasons to support their conclusions; and to make connections between their existing knowledge and understanding and the use of mathematics in the real world.
